What’s in your ass?

Your ass contains organs, muscles and erectile tissue. They allow you to poo and pee properly. And they make sure your penis works well.

This is what’s in your ass:

  • Anus and sphincters
  • Prostate
  • Bladder
  • Pelvic floor muscles
  • Large intestine and rectum

Below you can read how all of these body parts work. And what you can do to be able to enjoy anal sex.

Anus and rectum
The anus and rectum

Anus and sphincters

Anus and sphincters

There are 2 sphincters in your anus. They keep it closed. This way, poo can’t just fall out. Are these sphincters relaxed? Then inserting a penis in your ass shouldn’t be painful. And you’ll be able to just enjoy it.

Your anus is between your butt cheeks. Another word for it is asshole. Behind it, there’s your rectum. On both the inner and outer side of your anus, there are cavernous bodies. This helps keeping your anus closed. The cavernous bodies are very sensitive. As a result, anal sex can feel great.

How do you relax your sphincters?

The external sphincter is found at a depth of approximately 1 cm in your anus. You can contract and relax this muscle yourself. If you’re keeping a poo in, you contract it. When you’re pooing, you relax it.

The internal sphincter is a little deeper in your anus. You cannot relax it willingly. But with a light pressure it will relax on its own. For example when you’re taking a poo, or when a finger or penis is pushing against it. Is this happening too quickly or unexpectedly? Then your internal sphincter did not have time to relax. And this hurts.

If you’re relaxed, the internal sphincter will also relax more easily. Taking slow breaths will help with that. Breathe out when you insert something.

Prostate

Prostate

The prostate is found inside your body, behind your penis. The prostate enables you to shoot sperm when you cum. And makes sure that no pee comes out of your penis.

You can feel your prostate by inserting a finger in your anus and pushing it forward. The prostate is about the size of a walnut. When a penis enters your ass, it usually rubs the backside of your prostate. This feels very good. That’s why sometimes the prostate is called a man’s G spot.

Bladder

Bladder

Your bladder is found above your prostate. That’s where the pee is stored. Is your bladder full? Then you’ll feel the need to pee.

Why does it feel like you need to pee when there’s a penis in your anus?

It is possible for the penis to push against your bladder when it’s in your ass. Or against nerves that are close to your bladder. This makes you feel like you need to pee. Even if you don’t.

Do you feel this sensation? Then you have a couple of options:

  • Check if you actually need to pee
  • Try a different position
  • Take a moment to relax. Usually the feeling will go away

Pelvic floor muscles

Pelvic floor muscles

The pelvic floor muscles are found under your pelvis. These are muscles you probably use without noticing. But you can feel them contract when you:

  • Cum
  • Hold in a fart
  • Stop the flow while peeing

Are you stressed? Then your pelvic floor muscles will be contracting all the time. This can prevent you from getting a hard penis. It can also make it hard to poo. And it can make it unpleasant to take a penis in your ass.

Take some time to relax before sex. This will usually make sex easier.

Rectum and large intestine

Rectum and large intestine

The rectum is just above your anus. It’s the final portion of your bowels. The rectum is attached to your large intestine. The large intestine is where your poo is stored until you’re ready to go to the toilet. At the top of the rectum there’s a curve to the large intestine. That’s why your poo doesn’t fall out of your anus unless you push.

When you take a penis in your ass, it enters the rectum. Not the large intestine.

How can the penis go deeper inside?

It feels good when the penis goes deeper inside during sex. You can make your rectum a little longer by relaxing the curve. This will make it straighter. To do so:

  • Move down your pelvic floor muscles. This is the same movement you make when you release a fart you were holding in
  • Pull up your legs helps

If some poo comes out during sex

Some poo could come out when you have anal sex. But usually this doesn’t happen unless you feel the need to poo. It takes hours for the food you ate to become poo and get close to your anus. When this happens, you feel the need to poo. Do you not feel it? Then the poo isn’t there yet. And you don’t need to worry about it during sex.

What can stick around in your rectum is poo residue from the last time you went to the toilet. You can remove this by douching. Is your diet rich in fibers? For example, lots of vegetables, beans, fruit or whole wheat bread? Then your poo is probably healthy. This means there’s a smaller chance of poo residue in your rectum.

Abdominal cramps during sex

Sometimes, during sex, you might suddenly get cramps in your tummy. Do you feel this sensation? Then stop having sex. First, go to the toilet to take a poo.

This almost never happens. So don’t worry too much about it while you’re having sex.

Antidiarrheals for anal sex

Some people take pills against diarrhea to make sure there won’t be any poo in their rectum. This does work, but it’s completely unnecessary. It can give you a strong tummy ache and it’s bad for your bowels. So it’s better to avoid this.

Do you have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), Crohn’s disease or another bowel condition? And would you like to have anal sex? Then antidiarrheals can help stay clean. Discuss it with your doctor first. There are some treatments that could help you suffer less from these diseases.

Do you have diarrhea? Then it’s better to avoid anal sex for a while.

  • It’s easier to leak poo
  • You have a higher chance of STDs
  • You could pass on diarrhea. For example if you have shigellosis
  • Diarrhea could also mean you recently got HIV. If that’s the case, you could pass it on during sex. Check if your symptoms could be HIV

Chances of STDs

Chances of STDs with anal sex

With anal sex, it’s easy to get an STD. This is why:

  • Your bowels are fragile, and they can easily tear when something is poking them. Blood makes it easier to get an STD
  • Your bowels can easily absorb diseases. This includes STDs. This is true both if you’re taking a penis in your ass, and if you’re inserting your penis in someone’s ass

So protect yourself well against STDs and HIV. To do so:

  • Get tested 2 times a year for HIV and STDs
  • Use a condom
  • Do you want extra protection against HIV? Maybe PrEP is right for you. With this pill you won’t get HIV. Read more about PrEP
