How can you get an STD?

You get an STD through sex. Especially when you don't use a condom. You can get an STD in these areas:

• At or in your penis
• At or in your anus
• At or in your vagina
• In your mouth or throat
• In your blood

Symptoms of STDs

Do you have one of the symptoms listed below? Maybe you have an STD.

Symptoms at the penis or urethra:

• Irritation or pain when peeing
• Fluid from your penis
• Red skin around the urethra or dickhead
• Irritated skin, bumps or ulcers

Symptoms at your anus:

• Itch or irritation
• Pain or blood (during sex or pooping)
• Redness
• Fluid from your anus

Symptoms in your throat or mouth:

• Sore throat
• Vesicles in or around your mouth

In general:

• Flu-like symptoms
• Spots on your skin
• Swollen lymph nodes 

Symptoms on skin:

Do you have strange lumps, a rash or sores on your skin? It could be due to an STD, such as syphilis or MPOX.

Do you have (some of) these symptoms, and do you expect they might be because of an STD? Make an appiontment at your GP (doctor) or the GGD. 

An STD without symptoms

It is possible to have an STD without knowing it. Sometimes you don't notice, and you have no symtoms. It is still possible to transfer your STD to others you have sex with. And this person can also transfer the STD to others. 

Do you have varying sex partners? Get tested 2 times a year on HIV and STD's. Also do this if your partner has varying sex partners. 

When do you have a higher chance of STDs? 

You have a higher chance of getting an STD if:

• You have sex with more people
• You pay or get payed for sex
• You or your partner are from an area where more people have STDs. This is mainly in Asia, Africa, parts of South- and Middle-America, Eastern Europe and Russia
