A vaccine against gonorrhea?
The meningococcal B vaccine is a vaccine against the meningococcal bacterium (type B). It prevents serious illnesses such as blood poisoning or meningitis. The meningococcal bacterium resembles the gonorrhea bacterium. Because of this, it was thought that the vaccine might also provide some protection against gonorrhea. In the first studies, vaccinated men had 33–40% fewer gonorrhea infections. However, these studies were not ideally designed, making it difficult to determine whether the reduction was truly due to the vaccine.
New research: no effect against gonorrhea
That is why new studies were conducted. A French study as early as 2023 showed no effect of the vaccine on gonorrhea. An Australian study was also completed in March 2026. Once again, the vaccine was found not to provide protection. The conclusion is therefore clear: the meningococcal B vaccine does not work against gonorrhea.
Vaccination against meningococcal B
Vaccination teaches your immune system to recognize and fight a virus or bacterium. Against meningococcal B, the vaccine works well, providing 65 to 80 percent protection. This means you can still get the disease, but you greatly reduce your chances of doing so.
The vaccination consists of two shots in your upper arm. There must be at least one month between the first and second shots, but six months is better. Side effects may include fever, fatigue, headache, and pain at the injection site. These side effects disappear after a few days.

How much does it cost?
Because meningococcal B is very rare in the Netherlands, this vaccine is not commonly prescribed. It is also not covered by your health insurance. You must therefore pay for it yourself. Each provider sets their own price per dose, so the price varies. It usually costs around €130 per dose.
Protecting yourself against gonorrhea
Unfortunately, this vaccine does not reduce your risk of gonorrhea. DoxyPEP also does not work against gonorrhea. In fact, if you use DoxyPEP too often, it can make treating gonorrhea more difficult! Condoms are a good way to minimize your risk of gonorrhea as much as possible.
