How to safely use drugs during sex

How do you use drugs during sex?

You can use drugs in different ways:

• Swallowing
• Snorting through your nose
• Injecting/Shooting up in your body
• Injecting in your ass
• Smoking

Some ways are safer than others. Here is an overview:

Swallowing and snorting drugs

You can swallow drugs through your mouth, or snort them through your nose. This is the safest way. By doing this, drugs enter your body slowly and the feeling lasts longer. But it will take a little longer before you notice the effects. 

Snorting drugs can hurt your nose. And if you share the same sniffer with other people, you could get STDs like hepatitis B or hepatitis C or pass them on. 

Do you prefer not to snort? Then you can take powder drugs like this:

• Put the substance in a capsule and swallow it. You can buy empty capsules online or at the pharmacy
• Put the substance in a small piece of toilet paper and swallow it

Drugs in the form of a pill, such as ecstasy, can be swallowed with water.

Injecting drugs in your body (slamming)

You can also inject drugs in your body by using a needle. The substance will enter your bloodstream immediately. You will feel the effects at once, and often they can be very strong. 

Injecting in your body has disadvantages:

• Such a heavy feeling is not always pleasant
• Your syringe could be dirty. This can cause painful inflammations
• Do you share your syringe with others? In this case, you can pass on STDs to each other, like HIV or hepatitis

Injecting drugs in your ass

You can also inject drugs in your anus. This is called a booty bump. To do it, you use a syringe without a needle. You dissolve the drugs in a small amount of water. The drugs will enter your body quickly, so it won’t take long before you feel the effects.

Injecting in your ass has disadvantages:

• You can get cramps in your intestines/guts
• Your anus can get irritated. This can make it easier to get an STD

Do not share your syringe with others. This way you can avoid getting STDs in your anus.

Smoking drugs

Some drugs can be smoked by heating up a glass pipe. This is less safe than swallowing or snorting. The drugs enter your body quickly, so you feel the effect very intensely. The heat released can burn your windpipe and your lungs. You can burn your mouth with the pipe.

How can you use sex drugs as safely as possible?

Do you want to use drugs during sex? Then do it as safely as possible. Here are our tips for you.

Look for information beforehand

It’s important to know exactly what you are using, and which effect these substances have, especially if you want to combine different drugs.

Have your drugs tested

Before using them, always bring your drugs to the testing service. This way you will know exactly what you got and whether they contain too much of certain chemicals.

Do not use too many drugs, or too often

Do you use a lot of drugs during sex, or do you do it often? Then it can become difficult to have sex without drugs. And your body doesn’t have enough time to recover well. What should you keep in mind?

• Do not use too much of one drug in a short time
• Do not take too much at once. In the Drugs ABC at unity.nl you can read how much you can use of each drug.
• Only take more when the dose you took earlier wears off. Sometimes it can take a while before you feel something. So you should always wait one hour before you take more. This way you can make sure not to take too much

Do you use GHB? Pay special attention to keeping track of what you take and when. Accidentally taking one extra dose can quickly lead to overdose. In this case, you could end up at the hospital.

Have sex without drugs too

Remember to also have sex when you are not on drugs. This way you can keep this experience fun too. And you won’t be in the situation where you can only enjoy sex if you are high. 

Do not combine different drugs. Including alcohol 

It’s better not to take different drugs at the same time, or to combine them with alcohol: it can be dangerous. Often, adding a different drug can reduce the effect of the substance you’ve already taken. This can make the experience less fun.

Make sure you are in good shape before chemsex

Eat and sleep well before using drugs. Afterwards, keep some time free for rest and recovery. 

Make sure you sleep enough

Do not go on for too long and go to bed on time. Sleeping too little will worsen your hangover or dip. Do you use drugs for a few days in a row without sleeping? This can cause a psychosis, especially if you use crystal meth (T or Tina). 

Did you use drugs for a long stretch of time, and do you feel scared, restless or suspicious of others? These can be signs of a psychosis. In this case, you don’t know what is real and what isn’t anymore. And you could hear or see things that aren’t there. Drink enough water

When taking drugs, drink enough water, but not too much. Using ecstasy or MDMA can make you feel very thirsty. Do not drink more than 1 glass of water per hour.

Make sure you can cool down

Some drugs raise your body temperature. This can be dangerous and cause overheating. Especially if the clothes you are wearing don’t allow the heat to escape, for example, latex or rubber. Keep this in mind:

• Make sure that there are places where you can cool down
• Consider wearing clothing that allows your body heat to escape

Use condoms, PrEP and lube

You could choose to take bigger risks during sex if you are on drugs. And at sex parties where drugs are taken, not everyone uses condoms. Do you want to avoid getting an STD? Then bring condoms. Agree beforehand to use condoms, with yourself and others. And use lube, to prevent your anus from bleeding during sex.

Do you want to protect yourself from HIV? Then you could take PrEP. This is a medication you can take daily or around the sex. It will prevent you from getting HIV. The advantage is that you won’t have to think about it during the sex.

How can I get PrEP?  

Get tested for STDs and HIV

Get tested 2 times a year for STDs and HIV. Then you know for sure if you have an STD or not. Do you often have unprotected chemsex? Discuss with your doctor how best to protect yourself from HIV and other STDs.

Drugs and erections

Using drugs and alcohol can make getting or keeping your penis hard (erection) more difficult. That’s normal, especially when using ecstasy, cocaine, crystal meth, 3-MMC or other uppers.

What you can do about this:

• Do you use uppers? Then only take a small amount if you want to have sex. This way you might still be able to get hard
• Take a short break if you lose your erection
• With downers like GHB you can usually get hard 
• Do not drink alcohol if you’re using drugs
• There is medication you can use to get hard easily, like for example Kamagra. It’s better not to combine those with uppers (ecstasy, cocaine, 3-MMC, crystal meth) or with poppers. This can be dangerous for your heart. Do you have a heart condition? Then you should definitely avoid them.

What should you do if someone took too many drugs?

Did someone you are with take too much GHB or GBL and is he unconscious (passed out)? This is how you can help:

1. Check if he still reacts to pain. For example, pinch hard on his shoulder. Keep checking if he still reacts
2. Make him lie on his side, with his head tilted back and his nose pointing at the floor. This way you can prevent him from choking on his tongue or vomit. Check if he is still breathing
3. Make sure he stays warm: cover him with a blanket
4. Keep talking. Wait until he has really recovered
5. Is he not reacting? Then call 112 immediately. Tell them he took GHB. This will not cause legal issues, so be honest
