Anal tears or hemorrhoids caused by anal sex

What can you do if you’re experiencing them? 

  • Do you have anal sex? Then you might get some symptoms

  • For example, a tear in your anus. This means it’s been stretched too quickly or too often

  • You can also get hemorrhoids. These are swollen blood vessels close to your anus

  • Hemorrhoids can cause itch, bleeding or pain

  • Usually they heal on their own Are they bothering you? Then go see your doctor

Symptoms

How can you recognize an anal tear or hemorrhoids? 

Is there a tear in your anus? Or do you have hemorrhoids? These are the symptoms: 

  • Pain during a poo 

  • Anal bleeding. Usually only during a poo 

  • Itch around your anus, especially after taking a poo 

In some cases, hemorrhoids can be seen outside your anus by using a mirror. They appear as thicker, red-purple spots on your anus.

You could also have an STD

Symptoms on your anus can also be an STD. Do you think you might have an STD? Go see your GP or visit the GGD for an STD test.

What can you do

What can you do if you have hemorrhoids or an anal tear? 

Your symptoms are not severe and usually will heal on their own. Are you eating a healthy diet, drinking enough water and taking a break from bottoming? Then they will usually heal faster. Hemorrhoids usually require a little more time than anal tears. 

Are your symptoms not getting better? Or are they bothering you? Then go see your GP.

Sex or no sex

Can you still have sex if you have hemorrhoids or an anal tear? 

Do you have a tear in your anus or haemorrhoids? Then it’s better to avoid sex for a while. Why? 

  • It can hurt 

  • It can make the symptoms last longer 

  • It can make it easier to get HIV or another STD 

Do you still want to bottom? Always use a condom and enough lube. 

Preventing symptoms

How can you prevent hemorrhoids or anal tears? 

To lower your chances of haemorrhoids and anal tears: 

  • Eat a healthy diet rich in fibre: bread, vegetables, fruit and legumes This way you can prevent anal tears cause by hard poo

  • Drink enough: at least 1,5 litres of fluids a day, mostly water. This will help you poo without too much effort. So your anal tears won’t keep reopening

  • Use a lot of lube when taking a penis in your ass. Read more about lube

Get a free shot against hepatitis B 

Do you ever have sex without a condom? Then you could get hepatitis B, an STD. This can make you very sick. Make sure to prevent infection: get a free hepatitis B vaccine from the GGD.
