Chlamydia in brief

Chlamydia is an STI. Sometimes you get symptoms, but usually you don't notice anything. You don't need to get tested for chlamydia unless you have symptoms.

How can you get it?

How do you get chlamydia?

You can get chlamydia through sex. You can get the STI in your penis or anus.

Chlamydia in the throat

You can also get this STI in your throat. But this almost never happens. Your body will clear up chlamydia in your throat within a few days. Testing for chlamydia in the throat is therefore not necessary.

Symptoms

What are the symptoms of chlamydia?

Often, you will not notice any symptoms of chlamydia and will have no complaints. In that case, you do not need medication. Sometimes, however, you will have complaints. These complaints can occur 1 to 3 weeks after you have contracted chlamydia.

Complaints caused by chlamydia:

  • Pain when urinating
  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • Discharge from your penis, especially in the morning
  • Itching around your anus
  • Blood or mucus in your stool and diarrhea
  • Pain in your testicles

Other symptoms?

Do you have other symptoms? Your symptoms could also be caused by something else. It is therefore a good idea to see your doctor or the GGD. Don't wait too long and make an appointment.

Testing

Testing for chlamydia

If you have no symptoms, you do not need to treat chlamydia. Therefore, testing is not necessary. Usually, you will not notice that you have it and it will go away on its own. Without causing any damage to your body.

However, you should get tested in the following cases:

  • If you have symptoms that could be caused by chlamydia
  • If your regular partner or someone with whom you have sex frequently has chlamydia and symptoms. You should then get tested and treated to prevent that person from getting chlamydia again from you

Where can you get tested?

At Man tot Man Testlab, you will not be tested for chlamydia, but you will be tested for LGV. The GGD will only test you for chlamydia if you have symptoms. Do you have symptoms? Then make an appointment with your doctor or the GGD.

Please note: do you have chlamydia in your anus? Then it is important to be tested for LGV, a more serious variant of chlamydia that can cause serious symptoms. The treatment for this is different from that for regular chlamydia.

How does the test work?

  • You urinate in a container. If you have a vagina, a swab is taken.
  • You remove some mucus from your anus with a cotton swab. This is called a swab.
  • A throat swab is not necessary, because chlamydia in your throat clears up quickly.

Does the test show that you have chlamydia in your anus? Then the doctor will examine whether it is LGV. At Man tot Man Testlab, you will automatically be tested for LGV in the anus.

Treatment

Treatment of chlamydia

Chlamydia usually clears up on its own. If you have symptoms, you can get medication. You will usually take 2 pills every day for a week. The sooner you start treatment, the better it is for you. This prevents you from developing severe symptoms.

The treatment does not prevent you from getting the STI again. You can always get chlamydia again.

Have you started treatment? Then use a condom for another week when you have sex. You can still pass the STI on to someone else during that week.

Do you still have symptoms one week after treatment? Then make another appointment with your doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about chlamydia

  • You do not always pass chlamydia on to your partner. It is also possible that you have not been tested for chlamydia. If you get tested at the GGD or via Testlab and you have no symptoms, you will not be tested for chlamydia.

It is also possible that by the time you get tested, your body has already cleared the bacteria. And a final possibility is that the chlamydia came from another sexual partner after all.

  • There is a very small chance that a woman may become slightly less fertile due to chlamydia. This is especially true if you have had chlamydia with symptoms on multiple occasions. In that case, it may sometimes take a little longer to become pregnant. Men never become infertile due to chlamydia.

  • DoxyPEP works well to prevent chlamydia, but its use is not recommended. Taking antibiotics unnecessarily is not good for your health and can lead to resistance. Because chlamydia does not cause symptoms in most people and is not harmful to health, doxyPEP is not necessary.

  • Chlamydia in the throat is usually cleared up within a few days. It is not yet clear how long it takes for chlamydia in the urethra or anus to disappear on its own.
