More questions?

  • You will get your first injection at the GGD. The nurse will also take a blood sample. This will determine whether you already have antibodies against hepatitis B. One month later, you will have your second appointment. If the test shows that you already have antibodies against hepatitis B, you will not have to complete the vaccination. Your 3rd injection will be given 6 months after your first injection. Did you not manage to get all the injections on time? No problem. Then make an appointment at the GGD for your follow-up vaccination.

  • Usually, the vaccination works sufficiently. You do not need to check this. If you want to be sure, your doctor or the GGD can test whether you are sufficiently protected 4 to 8 weeks after your third injection. This is called an antibody titre test. If it appears that you are insufficiently protected, you can have another 3 injections done at the GGD.

  • If you as a trans person have sex with men, or if you are a sex worker, vaccination against hepatitis B is free. If, as a trans person, you have sex with women, you are not in the risk group.

  • Vaccination against hepatitis B is free for men who have sex with men and sex workers. Since 2011, children are also vaccinated. If you want to use PrEP, you have to be vaccinated against hepatitis B.

  • Unfortunately, if you are already vaccinated against hepatitis B, you cannot take advantage of the free hepatitis A+B vaccination. You can get a vaccination against hepatitis A at the GGD travel clinic (Reizigersvaccinaties) near you. It consists of 2 injections. The first injection gives you protection for about a year. Vaccination costs about €60 per injection. Sometimes, your health insurance will reimburse part of the amount.

  • Usually there are no side effects. Normal side effects of vaccination are:

    • Redness, swelling and pain at the site of the injection
    • Tiredness
    • Headache

These side effects will go away within a few days.

Vaccination against hepatitis A and B is safe. All over the world it has been used for more than 30 years.
